Day Two: Ballybunion Golf Course

The Ballybunion Golf Course is flooded with history and dates all the ways back to August 19th 1893.Back then, the Limerick Chronicle and Kerry Sentinel Gossip Columns stated that the greens all lie along Sandhills, that the turf is the springiest and the course offers every variety of golfing interest. In the 1897 March edition of the Irish Times it was described as a first class golf and sporting course “laid out by the professional who had laid out the links in Lahinch and Dollymount. Due the financial issues the golf course was forced to shut down in 1898 until 1906. Its founders were Colonel Bartholomew, an ex Indian Army Officer who had retired to live in the area and Mr B.J. Johnstone of Bank of Ireland.

Day Three: Tralee Golf Club

The world classed Tralee Golf Club, open since 1896, is submerged in the real south west of ireland and located on the Barrow Harbour. When the course first opened, players played 10 shillings in order to get access to the top quality grounds. The grounds are not only home the best of Irish History, all which can be read about on the grounds but is home to some of the best holes in Ireland, all of which have played their own uniques roles in History. As players begin the course holes number 1 and 2, have some stunning views of the beach overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean. Few know that this beach is more famous than it looks and was home to the 1970 movie Ryan’s Daughter which won an Academy Award for best Cinematography. The 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th shares history and myths dating back to 1190’s and what was once a safe haven for mischievous smugglers in earlier centuries. The 15th hole is located on the beach where on Good Friday 1916 Roger Casemen landed a U-Boat. He was later captured and trailed for treason in London.

Day Four: The European Club

The European Club, a favourite by many successful golf players, posed challenges and creates enjoyment for all the players that walks it grounds. The course is always a centre focus in Pat Ruddy’s eyes who continuously works on its design, making the grounds experience more enjoyable for everybody. Ruddy has vast experience since designing 36 projects similar to The European Club, but yet this course seems close to his heart.

Day Five: The K Golf Club

Designed by a great architect and a previous great golfer, th K Club was opened in 1991 and was famously selected a the home the 2006 Ryder Cup. The K Club, known nationally and globally amongst great golfers is also home the the Kildare and Country Golf Club which was named ‘The First Grade AA 5 Star Hotel” has other spectacular recreational facilities all of high are available on the 330 acre grounds. The creators of these magnificent grounds wanted each player to get enjoyment from their efforts and ensuring the design of the grounds contributed to achieving this. The men’s course consists of Par 75 while the ladies is par 72. Darren Clarke’s record is yet to be beaten in the Smurfit European Championship which was set in 1999. The river Liffey runs through 7th, 8th and 17th hole and with man made lakes scattered throughout, it sets the scene for a wonderful day in Kildare.

Day Six: Portmarnock Golf Club

In the past 117 years Portmarnock Golf Club hosted some of the greatest tournaments in golf and has welcomed national and international golfers from all levels. The Canada Cup was hosted by Portmarnock in 1960 and it was also the home to the first Irish Open in 1927 and to many other Irish Opens in the years gone by. The walker Cup and St Andrews Trophy also held their matches here over the years and was home to three honourable Irish golfers – Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley and Garth McGimpsey. The golf club also supports the young and upcoming player i.e. The Next Generation of Champions. The Jacques Leglise Trophy holds matches for two days where young boys age 18 or less compete for the trophy of the year.

Day Seven: The Island Golf Club

Known as one of the 12 oldest Golf Courses in Ireland, it is the third oldest golf club in Dublin and predates Portmarnock Golf Club by four years. The club was unique at the time as it had no connection to the Military and was initiated as a private proprietary club. Known As the “Syndicate” the 10 founding members only permitted others to join the club on a annual basis as annual ticket holders. Most of the Syndicate were also members of the Royal Dublin Golf Club who forbade Golfing on Sundays, which members were very unhappy about and encouraged them more to open up their own golf course..In September 1887, 4 men rowed from a North Dublin village called Malahide to “The Island” to access its suitability as a golf course. The 11th Hole on the golf course, known as “The Cricket Field”, was where the legendary cricket player W.G. Grace played in the early 1900’s in a cricket match. When the course first opened it consisted of eighteen individual holes and it has been altered many times since to become the Championship of a Golf Course it is known for today.
